Hall

In the Middle Ages, Hall experienced an economic boom. The old town, which is one of the most beautiful and best preserved in Tyrol, still reflects in every nook and corner the wealth it owed to salt mining, coinage and navigation on the Inn River.

Highlights during our tour:

• The Lower and Upper Town Square with the many colourful townhouses
• The historic Townhall
• The Gothic parish church of St. Nicholas
• The St. Magdalene Chapel
• The Stiftsplatz (convent square) with the former convent for gentlewomen
• The Baroque Jesuit Church

Hasegg Castle

After making our way through picturesque cobblestone streets, we continue to the former saltworks area with the sovereign princely Hasegg Castle and its Mint Tower, the landmark of Hall. Originally built as part of the city fortifications, Hasegg Castle has housed the Hall Mint since the 16th century. The first high-quality silver coin was minted in Hall in 1486 and Hall is therefore not only the birthplace of the later named “Thaler“, but also the cradle of the modern word ‘Dollar’.

Bottom line - an entertaining tour during which you not only get to know the rich 700-year history of the city, but the tour also provides fascinating insights into city life in the Middle Ages!

Our tip:

A visit to the Mint Museum in Hall.
Let us guide you around the Hall Mint Museum and we will turn your visit into a great experience! Half a millennium of European coin-minting history is revealed and brought to life in the Hall Mint Museum, displaying hammer-striking and water-driven techniques, like the faithful replica of a giant 16th century cylindrical stamping press. Admire the world’s first ‘Thaler’ and the largest silver Thaler (contains 20 kg of silver). Conclude your visit by minting your own coin by hand (duration of the visit approx. 1 hour).
